In Harmony with Spring

Spring Harmony

Spring’s arrival brings optimism and renewed vigour. All around us there is a stirring of life force as nature emerges from winter’s stillness. It is light when we wake up in the morning, and it is still light when most of us leave work for the day. What a joy after winter’s short dark days! As the temperature rises so does our energy. This season of renewal inspires a “spring” in our step and a song in our hearts.

The quality of natural light changes with each season. In springtime light is luminous, exquisitely soft and clear. A kaleidoscope of colours peek through as flowers, buds and leaves emerge. There is the fragrance of wattle and jasmine in the air, and the birds are singing.

The weather in spring is changeable; windy and wet one moment, sparkling and clear sunshine the next. Spring showers replenish the earth and cleanse the sky. Sunrises are rosy pink and amber, sunsets pastel turquoise and peach.

In a world of increasing turmoil, violation, uncertainty and stress, spring brings hope – for innocence, newness and a fresh start.

If you were attuned to winter’s stillness, you would have used this contracted time for quiet inner work and contemplation. Conserving energy during the colder months ensures that with the coming of Spring you are replenished, focussed and ready to engage in the bigger world again.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the season of Spring expresses the “wood” element. Wood is associated with the eyes (vision), the gall bladder (decision-making) and the liver (planning and initiating). Wood type foods are typically sour and upward-growing in nature, and include grains, leafy green vegetables, sprouts and sauerkraut. Steamed vegetables and stir-fries suit the lighter, more creative energy of Spring. Eating wood-type foods at this time of the year helps to harmonise the body to the season.

As Spring’s stirring energy stimulates the liver and gall bladder into action there may be a flourishing of new ideas and self-motivation. However, the erratic wet and windy weather also brings with it disturbed feelings of restlessness and impatience. Heavy, baked and greasy foods are not appropriate now as they obstruct the body’s natural desire for freedom, movement and growth. Lighter, more vibrant foods, prepared as stir-fries, soups and steamed vegetables, can dissolve the fat, mucus and sluggish energy that may have gathered during the winter months.

Similarly this principle can be applied to the cleansing of our homes, using spring cleaning and smudging. To more readily assimilate the vital energy of Spring, Feng Shui principles can be applied with great success. Just as we should choose lighter styles of cooking, and seek more physical activity outdoors to take care of our bodies, so should our homes be freed of stagnation and blockage – revitalised, cleansed and refreshed to make way for the new.

A balanced and beautiful home should be seen as a living, changing entity that needs to be adjusted as you change your goals, values and aspirations. Ensure that your home continues to support your total health and well-being, that it reflect your goals and life directions, offers an experience of comfort, sanctuary and beauty, and expresses meaningfully the story of who you are.
