What’s New:
In Harmony with Spring
Spring’s arrival brings optimism and renewed vigour. All around us there is a stirring of life force as nature emerges from winter’s stillness. It is light when we wake up in the morning, and it is still light when most of us leave work for the day. What a joy after winter’s short dark days! As the temperature rises so does our energy. This season of renewal inspires a “spring” in our step and a song in our hearts.
The quality of natural light changes with each season. In springtime light is luminous, exquisitely soft and clear. A kaleidoscope of colours peek through as flowers, buds and leaves emerge. There is the fragrance of wattle and jasmine in the air, and the birds are singing.
The weather in spring is changeable; windy and wet one moment, sparkling and clear sunshine the next. Spring showers replenish the earth and cleanse the sky. Sunrises are rosy pink and amber, sunsets pastel turquoise and peach.
In a world of increasing turmoil, violation, uncertainty and stress, spring brings hope – for innocence, newness and a fresh start.
If you were attuned to winter’s stillness, you would have used this contracted time for quiet inner work and contemplation. Conserving energy during the colder months ensures that with the coming of Spring you are replenished, focussed and ready to engage in the bigger world again.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine the season of Spring expresses the “wood” element. Wood is associated with the eyes (vision), the gall bladder (decision-making) and the liver (planning and initiating). Wood type foods are typically sour and upward-growing in nature, and include grains, leafy green vegetables, sprouts and sauerkraut. Steamed vegetables and stir-fries suit the lighter, more creative energy of Spring. Eating wood-type foods at this time of the year helps to harmonise the body to the season.
As Spring’s stirring energy stimulates the liver and gall bladder into action there may be a flourishing of new ideas and self-motivation. However, the erratic wet and windy weather also brings with it disturbed feelings of restlessness and impatience. Heavy, baked and greasy foods are not appropriate now as they obstruct the body’s natural desire for freedom, movement and growth. Lighter, more vibrant foods, prepared as stir-fries, soups and steamed vegetables, can dissolve the fat, mucus and sluggish energy that may have gathered during the winter months.
Similarly this principle can be applied to the cleansing of our homes, using spring cleaning and smudging. To more readily assimilate the vital energy of Spring, Feng Shui principles can be applied with great success. Just as we should choose lighter styles of cooking, and seek more physical activity outdoors to take care of our bodies, so should our homes be freed of stagnation and blockage – revitalised, cleansed and refreshed to make way for the new.

Feng Shui Tips for Spring
- Have a thorough Spring clean. This household tradition has solid Feng Shui foundations. Cleaning attracts a vibrant life force to all that is scrubbed and polished, and consciously imbues your surroundings with care.
Spring cleaning is recommended for your office too. Clean up the clutter of files and junk mail on your computers. Refresh your business purpose, values and identity. Ensure that your business identity and logo, together with your furnishings, professionally and accurately express the qualities of the business.- Sweep your path, polish your front door and give your letterbox a fresh coat of paint to enhance the flow of Qi into your life.
- Repainting your home’s interior is a powerful way to refresh and update your living spaces to better reflect who you are now.
- Lighten up. It’s time to get rid of clutter. Discard any items that are now irrelevant, outdated or unnecessary. This makes space for new opportunities.
Now that you don’t need to cluster around the fire and the entertainment unit, move your living room furniture into a more open and social arrangement that connects with the garden.- Spiritually cleanse your home and work spaces using one of our Space Clearing kits. Smudging with Frankincense purifies, strengthens and sanctifies your special places.
- Flush out stagnant Qi by opening all doors and windows, and allow sunshine and fresh air to replenish the life force of your living spaces.
- When outdoors beware the invasive nature of the wind, as its cutting chill can cause sickness. Wear a scarf to protect your head and neck.
- Used in an oil burner essential oils of jasmine, rose, sage, mandarin, lemongrass or eucalyptus can be used to harmonise, replenish and uplift.
Similarly use Spring’s inspiration and beauty to cleanse and renew your inner world. Reflect on how you might have changed since last spring. Who are you now, what do you value, what is your path? Some redesigning and arranging of your outer environment may be necessary to better express and support who you truly are.- Choose airy inspirational colours and textures to decorate yourself and your home. In contrast to winter’s more sombre and subdued tones, consider translucent limey greens, clear blues and pinks, golden wattle yellows, silky whites to express Spring’s lightness of being.
- The entrancing scents and colours of a European spring can be celebrated in the garden with irises, freesias, daffodils, hyacinths, poppies, tulips and lilies.
Pots and vases of fresh flowers in your office will keep you connected with this time of beauty, inspiration and grace.- Native birds bring song and life force to your garden. Attract them with Correa, Bottlebrush, Grevillea, Tea-tree, Kunzea, Wattle, Banksia and Eucalyptus.
- Put bells on your cats!
- Sow seeds now for summer flowers and vegetables.
- Similarly the nurturing and feeding of new business ideas can reward you with prosperous fruits.
